Lash Extension Refill: What to Do (and Avoid) First 48 Hours for Eyelash Extensions
By Designer Lashes | October 12, 2026
Quick context: Our Lash Extension Refill is a 90-minute appointment ($75 to $100) to maintain classic lashes and keep your set looking clean, even, and natural.
If you do one thing after your Lash Extension Refill in Scottsdale, do this: keep your lashes dry and hands-off for the first 24 to 48 hours. That means no water, steam, heavy sweating, or rubbing. Our long-time clients love how natural and long-lasting their lashes look, and the aftercare is a big reason they stay that way.
The first 24 to 48 hours: the rules that keep your refill looking full
Fresh adhesive needs a little quiet time. When you respect that window, you usually keep more lash extension lashes in place, and you avoid that early “gap” that makes a refill feel short-lived.
Do this
- Keep lashes dry. Skip direct water on the eyes, splashy face-washing, and letting the shower hit your lashes.
- If you have to wash your face, use a damp cloth and work around the eye area.
- Sleep on your back if you can, or use a silk pillowcase to reduce friction.
Avoid this
- Steam and heat right on the face, including saunas, hot yoga, steam rooms, and leaning over a steaming sink.
- Heavy sweating workouts for 24 to 48 hours. A light walk is fine. The goal is avoiding sweat soaking the lash line.
- Oil-based skincare and eye makeup remover near the lash line. Oils weaken the bond fast.
- Rubbing, picking, or “checking” the lashes with your fingers.
Desert-life note for Scottsdale: Between dry heat, pool season, and those monsoon-humidity swings, your lash line can go through a lot in a week. The first 48 hours are when you lock in the bond that helps your lashes hold steady through it.
If you’re headed through Old Town Scottsdale or the Camelback Corridor near Scottsdale Fashion Square right after your refill, keep a pair of sunglasses handy. Less squinting, less eye rubbing, and less temptation to fuss with your lashes.
Days 3 to 7: keep them clean, and stop the sneaky lash killers
After the first 48 hours, your focus shifts. Now it’s about keeping your eyelash extension lashes clean so they stay fluffy, and avoiding habits that twist or stress the natural lash extension base.
What we see mess up a refill fastest
- Face-down sleeping or burying your face into a pillow. That friction can pull lashes early and create unevenness.
- Mascara on extensions. It clumps, it makes cleansing harder, and it can lead to extra shedding when you try to remove it.
- Eyelash curlers. They can kink the extension and stress your natural lash.
- Oil drifting from eye creams, cleansing balms, or sunscreen applied too close to the lash line.
A lot of our regulars stick with us for years because they like that “people think these are my real lashes” look. That comes down to two things: meticulous application in the studio, and you being gentle at home. If you treat them like delicate fibers instead of makeup, they tend to stay soft and natural.
The daily routine we recommend for natural eyelash extensions
You don’t need a 10-step routine. You need consistency. This is what keeps a refill looking clean and full between appointments.
Cleanse (oil-free)
Use an oil-free lash cleanser or an oil-free gentle cleanser and cleanse along the lash line once daily, especially if you wear makeup or sunscreen. Clean lashes shed less mess, and they look darker and fluffier.
Dry, then brush
Pat dry, don’t rub. Then lightly brush with a clean spoolie to bring everything back into place. Brushing is gentle grooming, not styling. If you’re yanking, it’s too much.
Makeup is fine, but be picky
You can still wear makeup with eyelash extensions. Keep it oil-free, skip mascara on the extensions, and use a remover that doesn’t require rubbing. If your eyeliner makes you scrub, it’s the wrong liner for lash extensions.
If your lashes get wet too early
Don’t panic. Gently pat them dry, don’t rub. Brush them back into place with a clean spoolie. If you notice clusters sticking together or a sudden “slide” where lashes feel loose at the base, call us. We’d rather check it quickly than have you try to fix it at home.
Refill timing in Scottsdale: 2 to 3 weeks makes life easier
Most people do best on a 2 to 3 week Lash Extension Refill schedule. Wait much longer, and there’s simply less extension left to “refill, ” which can turn your appointment into more of a rebuild.
“No matter where I travel in the world, I’m constantly receiving compliments on how amazing my lashes look.”
one of our long-time clients
If you have photos, trips, or a packed social calendar, book ahead. Pool season, extra workouts, and monsoon humidity can all stress retention. Planning your refill window keeps your lash line even, especially if you’re popping into Scottsdale Fashion Square or heading to dinner in Old Town and you want your lashes to look done without extra makeup.
